How Microchipping Works

A microchip is a tiny device about the size of a grain of rice that is placed under the skin between your pet’s shoulder blades. Each chip carries a unique identification number. When a lost pet is brought to a veterinary hospital or animal shelter, staff use a scanner to read the number and look up the owner’s contact information in the microchip registry.

A microchip is not a GPS tracker, and it does not require batteries or charging. It lasts for your pet’s lifetime and cannot fall off or be removed like a collar or tag.

Is Microchipping Painful?

Microchipping is a quick procedure performed with a needle, similar to a routine vaccine. Most pets react no more than they would to any other injection. Many owners choose to have a microchip placed during a wellness exam, at the same time as vaccinations, or while their pet is under anesthesia for a spay, neuter or other surgery. Our team uses gentle low stress handling to keep the experience calm.

Which Pets Should Be Microchipped?

We recommend microchips for all dogs and cats, including indoor-only cats, who can slip out an open door. Some exotic pets, such as ferrets and rabbits, can also be microchipped through our ferret, pocket pet and reptile care services.

Keep Your Registration Up to Date

A microchip only works if the registry has your current information. After your pet is microchipped, be sure to register the chip and update your phone number and address any time they change. We can scan your pet’s chip at any visit to confirm it is working properly.

Tips to Keep Your Pet Safe

  • Use a collar with ID tags in addition to a microchip
  • Check fences and gates regularly
  • Keep pets indoors during fireworks and storms, when anxious pets are more likely to bolt
  • Consider a behavior consultation for pets that try to escape

How does a pet microchip work?

A microchip stores a unique ID number that can be read with a scanner. The number is linked to your contact information in a microchip registry.

Does a microchip track my pet’s location?

No. A microchip is not a GPS device. It provides permanent identification that can be scanned when a lost pet is found.

Is microchipping painful for my pet?

Microchipping feels similar to a routine vaccine. It is quick and most pets tolerate it very well.

How long does a microchip last?

Microchips are designed to last for your pet’s lifetime and do not need batteries.

Should indoor cats be microchipped?

Yes. Indoor cats can escape through open doors or windows, and a microchip greatly increases the chance they will be returned.

What should I do after my pet is microchipped?

Register the microchip and keep your contact information current with the registry any time you move or change phone numbers.
